During the fighting in Ukraine, contract soldier Stas Silchenkov, born in 2005, died. His mother reported this – first in the group “Overheard Smolensk”, then – in a conversation with the BBC Russian Service. This is the first confirmed death of an 18-year-old military man.
“Stas died on November 17 in the village of Sinkovka, Kharkov region, Kupyansky district. The death was reported only on December 12. She buried her son on December 16 in the village of Nizhnyaya Gedeonovka,” said the mother of the deceased.
Stas Silchenkov was born on May 20, 2005. This year he graduated from Smolensk school No. 24. He was awarded the Order of Courage posthumously. The BBC Russian Service notes that the death of a military man born in 2005 in combat in Ukraine has not previously been publicly reported.
In the spring of 2023, the State Duma approved amendments that allow 18-year-old school graduates to enter into contracts with the Ministry of Defense. Previously, it was possible to serve under a contract after completing secondary or higher professional education. The amendments were unanimously supported by 394 deputies.
