The deadly consequences of the storm “Ciaran” in Italian Tuscany are named

Storm Ciaran, which has swept across several European countries, has killed seven people in Italy after heavy rain caused flooding.

Hundreds of people were forced to flee their homes and others were left without power in Tuscany as a storm swept across Europe, Reuters reported.

A seventh person was found dead and another was still missing, more than 24 hours after rivers overflowed their banks following heavy rains in the central Italian region of Tuscany, news agency Ansa reported.

The body of a 69-year-old man was found in the town of Campi Bisenzio, about 15 kilometers northwest of Florence, the news agency said. Officials earlier said six people were killed in the flooding that began late Thursday.

There were fears the Arno River could flood Florence after nearby towns were inundated by the southern edge of Storm Ciaran, but the waters peaked mid-morning on Friday without major incident in the historic city.

The Ciaran was propelled by a powerful jet stream that swept in from the Atlantic, unleashing heavy rain and fierce winds that caused severe flooding in parts of Britain, Belgium, the Netherlands and France, Reuters reported.

About 300 people were forced to flee their homes in Tuscany, while many others had their water and electricity supplies cut off, Ansa quoted the region’s president Eugenio Giani as saying on Saturday.

According to initial estimates, the disaster caused damage in the amount of 300 million euros, the head of the region added.

Another person, a firefighter, went missing in the northeastern region of Veneto, Sky TV channel TG24 reported on Friday, citing the region’s governor.

The Italian government declared a state of emergency on Friday and allocated an initial tranche of 5 million euros to help the worst-hit areas.

Weather warnings remained in force in several regions of Italy, with some schools closed after a week in which strong winds and heavy rain battered the country.

Italy is considered to be particularly vulnerable to the effects of climate change. Floods in the Emilia-Romagna region in May killed at least 14 people, Reuters recalls.

Meanwhile, the UK Met Office has raised its heavy rainfall warning across southern England, with almost 200 flood warnings issued across the country.

The yellow warning was issued days after Storm Ciaran hit the same area with rain, flooding and winds of up to 100mph.

The Met Office said already severe weather conditions would increase the risk of flooding and travel disruption.

The Met Office said it was raising the weather warning’s impact level to medium to account for “higher rainfall amounts in parts of the South East”.

Met meteorologist Dan Stroud said this level of rainfall in itself would not normally cause much concern, but it came “against the backdrop of a very wet October and ongoing problems in parts of Sussex”.

He added: “It really doesn’t take much more rain for there to be further impacts on surface water problems on roads.”

Storm Ciaran was still causing some problems on Britain’s railways on Friday. LNER, which operates the line between London King’s Cross and Edinburgh’s Waverley Station, has advised passengers not to travel until Saturday.

Delays and cancellations were expected as trains and staff were stranded due to power outages.

Other operators also warned of service disruptions as they cleared debris from the tracks.
