The developer of the game “Troubles” Alexey Koptsev and the head of the Lesta Games studio Malik Khatazhaev told RBC about the difficulties video game developers faced after the start of the military operation on the territory of Ukraine. According to them, an emergency change of software to Russian analogues, as well as “emergency migration to Yandex.Cloud” significantly affected the business.
“And no one could imagine that the stable Google would begin to turn into a pumpkin. We were given a week to transfer the data. A lot was saved, but there were still losses,” says Alexey Koptsev. Prior to this, all data (about 2 terabytes) of the company was stored in Google Drive.
According to Mr. Koptsev, in addition to the data, the company also lost a fairly large amount of money – the production of the project was worth 500 million rubles. began 1.5 years before the start of the military operation. In addition, a large number of Russian analogue applications are still “much inferior” to their American counterparts in terms of functionality and quality.
Malik Khatazhaev notes that due to sanctions and the transition to Russian software, the company had to reconfigure most processes from scratch. “In some areas it has set us back or slowed down development significantly,” he said.
At the same time, Malik Khatazhaev added that the above factors did not affect the cost of developing video games. “At the global level, development in Russia has become even cheaper. This is a dangerous situation that could lead to Russia turning into a country of outsourcers,” added Mr. Khatazhaev.
After the start of the military operation in Ukraine, most major developers stopped selling their games in Russia, deliveries of Xbox and PlayStation also stopped, and Microsoft and Sony limited access to their services. According to TAdviser, in 2021 the total revenue of foreign IT vendors who left Russia (Dell, HP Inc, SAP CIS, Cisco, IBM, HPE, Oracle, Microsoft, Intel) amounted to 231.3 billion rubles. In 2022, their income fell threefold due to leaving Russia – to 72.6 billion rubles.
