The court in Bucharest decided to begin consideration of the case of the 1989 revolution

The Bucharest Court of Appeal has decided to reopen the investigation into the case related to the events of the 1989 revolution. The case involves former Romanian leaders, as well as high-ranking military and party officials.
According to Romanian media, the panel decided to begin trial in the case against the defendants, including Ion Iliescu, the former president of Romania, Gelu Voiculescu, the former deputy prime minister of the Romanian government, and Joseph Rusu, the former head of military aviation.
The case “On the 1989 Revolution” was previously considered by the Supreme Court of Romania, which noted that Iliescu did not hold the position of head of state at the time of those events. At that time, the Council of the National Salvation Front was working, headed by Iliescu and Petre Roman. The Council until February 1990 served as head of state.
In 1990, the military prosecutor’s office opened a criminal case, which stated that “the actions and orders of the country’s new political and military leadership led to the murders and imprisonment of a significant number of people, which meets the criteria of a crime against humanity.”
