Judge of the Basmanny Court of Moscow Olga Lipkina the claim of Roskomnadzor canceled the media license issued to Novaya Gazeta. The reason allegedly was “failure to submit the charter of the editorial office within the time limits established by the law on mass media.” In the paper itself paid attentionthat this claim refers to 2006, although the requirement to provide a charter appeared in 2018.
At the court session, a representative of Roskomnadzor supported the demand to revoke the license. The editor-in-chief of Novaya Gazeta, Dmitry Muratov, criticized the court’s decision and promised to appeal it. “This is an insignificant decision, ordered, political. Not having the slightest legal basis,” he said (quote from Mediazona, which the Ministry of Justice recognized as a foreign media agent).
Novaya Gazeta was founded in 1993 by former Komsomolskaya Pravda employees Sergei Kushnerev, Pavel Voshchanov, Akram Murtazaev, Dmitry Sabov and Dmitry Muratov. Until March 2022, it was published three times a week with a circulation of 108.1 thousand copies. Suspended work on March 28 against the backdrop of the Russian military operation in Ukraine.
In July, Novaya Gazeta fined for 300 thousand rubles. for “dissemination of deliberately unreliable socially significant information.” A TASS source reported that the protocol was drawn up because of Dmitry Muratov’s video message against the military operation in Ukraine. August edition fined another 350 thousand rubles. for the same reason.
Journalists of the newspaper launched two new projects: “New Newspaper. Europe” and “New story-newspaper”. Both of their sites were blocked at the request of the Prosecutor General’s Office. Roskomnadzor is also seeking the annulment of the registration of the Novaya Gazeta website as an electronic media in the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation.
