During a spacewalk, cosmonauts Oleg Kononenko and Nikolai Chub installed a small-sized radar on the Nauka module, but were unable to fully deploy it either automatically or manually. Work continues outside the International Space Station (ISS), according to information from Roscosmos.
During the spacewalk, the cosmonauts installed a small-sized radar for observing the Earth’s surface on the Nauka module. However, attempts at automated deployment were unsuccessful. Cosmonaut Chub tried to manually install the radar panels, but after several unsuccessful attempts, command on Earth ordered them to complete the work and return to the ISS.
A NASA Mission Control representative said that the astronauts will solve this problem in the next spacewalk, but for now the radar does not interfere with the operation of the station.
The spacewalk is carried out as part of Expedition ISS-70 and is the sixth in 2023. The main purpose of the exit is to inspect the location of the coolant leak from the radiator of the “Science” module. Cosmonauts Oleg Kononenko and Nikolai Chub perform work in their respective spacesuits. The exit hatch of the Poisk module was opened at 20:49 Moscow time, and the exit was expected to last about 6 hours 52 minutes.
