In 2023, the total fertility rate in Russia, the average number of children per woman, decreased to 1.41, according to preliminary data from Rosstat, which I reviewed RBC. The last time values below this figure (1.31) were recorded was 17 years ago – in 2006.
The highest results in the country for 2023 were recorded in Chechnya (2.66), Tuva (2.44) and the Altai Republic (2.03). The minimum values were set in Sevastopol (0.98) and the Leningrad region (0.88). At the same time, in 2023, the number of third and subsequent children per woman has increased. The Ministry of Labor explained that this is due to strengthening measures of state support for families.
According to the base scenario of the Rosstat demographic forecast, in 2024 the birth rate will drop to 1.32, and in 2025 it will increase to 1.33. It is predicted that by 2045 it will be 1.66.
The total fertility rate shows how many births one woman would give birth on average during the reproductive period (from 15 to 50 years) if the birth rate of the year in which the observation is carried out remains the same in each age group. The coefficient reflects only the intensity of births in childbearing ages and characterizes the average birth rate per year.
