The attack on Belgorod became the most memorable news during the holidays – Kommersant

The massive shelling of Belgorod in December 2023 became one of the most memorable information events for Russians during the New Year holidays. This is evidenced by the results of a study by the sociological agency Weber. Citizens also discussed the holiday itself and the frosts.
Agency “Weber” is a project of ANO “Dialogue”. The agency’s study was conducted online on January 5, 2024. 2,100 Russians over 18 years old took part in it. The question was open (any answer could be given, not the one provided by sociologists). The survey results indicate “Vedomosti”.
According to the agency, 34% of respondents recalled the shelling of Belgorod. People also noted that what happened was a tragedy and a great emotional experience. Against this background, 11% of respondents also remembered news related to the military operation in Ukraine, including January 3 prisoner exchange.
Other topics discussed include:
- the New Year itself (it was called the central event by 11% of study participants); personal events: from “parting with a loved one and a temperature of 39.8” to “a relative’s anniversary” and “a trip to a holiday home” (8%);
- meetings with loved ones during the holidays and visits from family members (5%);
- January frosts and snowfalls in a number of regions of Russia (4%).
On December 30, as a result of the shelling of Belgorod, 25 people were killed, including five children, and more than 100 people were injured. Damage got more than 40 buildings, including three shopping centers. Governor of the Belgorod Region Vyacheslav Gladkov named this shelling is the “heaviest” since the beginning of the military operation in Ukraine.
