The Asian Development Bank said that the effects of the coronavirus pandemic and the conflict in Ukraine, rising inflation and the cost of living have more than doubled the number of poor people in developing countries in the Asia-Pacific region. Data from the bank’s report is provided by Reuters.
It is noted that in 2022 the number of people living in poverty in the developing countries of the Asia-Pacific region reached 155.2 million, which is comparable to 3.9% of the population of the region. Experts say the number of poor has increased by 67.8 million amid health and cost of living crises. At the same time, the study does not take into account the statistics of Australia, New Zealand and Japan.
Albert Park, chief economist at the Asian Development Bank, pointed out that the Asia-Pacific region is gradually recovering from the pandemic, but the increase in the cost of living hinders progress in eradicating poverty.
