The Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC) plans to submit the issue of the canonization of Generalissimo Alexander Suvorov to the profile commission for consideration. About it informed Patriarch Kirill at the opening of the Synod.
The Russian Ministry of Defense addressed the Russian Orthodox Church with a request to canonize Alexander Suvorov in 2022: in March, Deputy Defense Minister Nikolai Pankov made such a proposal at a meeting with Patriarch Kirill in the Danilov Monastery. The Russian Orthodox Church promised to collect the necessary materials about the life of the commander.
Alexander Suvorov (1730-1800) – Russian commander and military theorist. He didn’t lose a single battle. After he was buried in the Alexander Nevsky Lavra of St. Petersburg. They have been proposing to canonize the commander for several years now. In 2020, Konstantin Malofeev, the founder of the Tsargrad TV channel, made such an offer.
As Bishop Savva (Tutunov) of Zelenograd, the deputy head of the affairs of the Moscow Patriarchate, clarified, for the canonization of the commander, documentary evidence of his “miraculous works” is needed. At the same time, the representative of the church noted, one should avoid replacing holiness with heroism. Of the military leaders, Alexander Nevsky, Dmitry Donskoy and Admiral Fyodor Ushakov have already been canonized as saints of the Russian Orthodox Church.
