In Japan, a 17-year-old Canadian scrawled his name on a 13th-century UNESCO monument
In Japan, a Canadian scrawled his initials on a wooden column of an 8th-century temple, after which he was detained by the police. It is reported by CNN.
A 17-year-old youth carved a name on the UNESCO World Heritage Site Todai-ji in Nara City with his fingernail. “On one of them, a young man carved the word “Julian” with his fingernail about 170 centimeters above the ground,” the policeman explained.
The law enforcement officer added that the incident was witnessed by a tourist from Japan, who asked the teenager to stop. After the Canadian ignored the request, the Japanese reported the act of vandalism to the police station. A day later, the teenager was invited for interrogation.
The boy confessed to what he had done, explaining that he did it not to cause harm.
CNN reports that law enforcement officers have not stopped the investigation. If it establishes that the young man violated the law on the protection of cultural values, the case will be sent to the prosecutor’s office. The boy was not detained.
