The State Duma of the Russian Federation adopted a draft law on the prohibition of clear sanitary felling on the territory of Lake Baikal. It is reported by TASS with reference to the senators.
According to the current law “On the Protection of Lake Baikal”, clear sanitary felling is prohibited in the central ecozone.
The proposed bill proposes to replace this ban with “timber harvesting, except for the fact that citizens harvest timber for their own needs.” Thus, when the law is adopted, clear sanitary cuttings will be allowed in the central ecological zone.
According to the text of the bill, clear sanitary felling in the central ecozone will be allowed until December 31, 2030 in order to build communal infrastructure, federal, regional, intermunicipal, local roads, fire breaks, and visitor service points.
In addition, until December 31, 2025, in the central eco-zone it will be allowed to transfer land to another category of the forest fund when creating specially protected objects and objects. Also, planning the boundaries of settlements in the world based on data from the USRN, updated on February 1, 2018.
