Most often, the age at which gray hair appears is not associated with stress, but with genetics, said “Gazete.Ru” plastic surgeon, candidate of medical sciences, founder of a clinic specializing in cosmetology and hair therapy Ilya Almazov. But sometimes hair that has turned gray “before time”, according to the expert, can also talk about health problems.

Hair follicles have cells that produce melanin, which is responsible for hair color. With age, these cells begin to die.

“Contrary to popular belief, stress does not cause gray hair,” Almazov said. “Genes are known to play a significant role here.” Most people, according to the specialist, will begin to go gray around the same age as their parents, grandparents. “The autosomal dominant gene, IRF4, is to blame for this,” Almazov emphasized.

However, if the premature gray hair detected by a person has not previously been observed in parents at the same age, then it is necessary to consult a doctor.

Among the causes of gray hair in young people can be called vitamin B12 deficiency – it leads to pernicious anemia, diseases of the pituitary gland or thyroid gland.

Also, the presence of some genetic abnormalities may be associated with premature graying. For example, autoimmune disorders, when the human body misidentifies a cell and attacks healthy tissue.

“Smoking also contributes to premature greying,” Almazov also added. “Especially under the age of 30.”

To maintain the natural color of the hair, it is recommended to consume B vitamins. In addition, foods rich in protein and containing large amounts of calcium, copper, iron, vitamin D and zinc are useful.
