Foods containing resistant starch (such as bananas, legumes, sweet potatoes, white rice) can reduce inflammation in the body and improve digestive health. The study results were published in the journal Frontiers in Nutrition.
The study was carried out by scientists from the University of Science and Technology of Lille in France. They noted that resistant starch, or indigestible starch, is not broken down by pancreatic enzymes and, once in the large intestine, serves as food for beneficial bacteria, acting similarly to dietary fiber.
The positive effects of resistant starch on the gut microbiome have been found to promote healthy digestion and reduce the likelihood of constipation and bloating. Foods rich in resistant starch include bananas, sweet potatoes, legumes, white rice, corn and cashews.
Additionally, other studies have shown that consuming these foods can also reduce inflammation levels in the body due to their antioxidant properties, which can neutralize the effects of free radicals and other oxidative substances.
