Last night the UN General Assembly (GA) accepted resolution entitled “Harnessing the Power of Safe, Secure and Reliable Artificial Intelligence Systems for Sustainable Development.” The authors of the document propose to implement measures to respect intellectual property rights, ensure confidentiality and protection of personal data, as well as transparency, predictability, and reliability of artificial intelligence (AI) systems throughout their entire life cycle.

The resolution, proposed by the United States and co-sponsored by 120 states, calls for efforts to ensure that all automated decisions and related processes are subject to human oversight. The GA also called on all UN member states to “refrain from capturing or using AI systems that cannot be controlled under international humanitarian law, or systems that pose risks to human rights.” “The same human rights that exist offline must be protected online, including the life cycle of AI systems,” the General Assembly emphasized.
