Scientists at Texas Tech University in the course of the study called the danger of doomscrolling, reports website KP.RU. This new term (or diagnosis) has recently been used to describe depression due to the constant reading of bad news in news feeds.
The term was born from a combination of two English words – doom, which means “death, fate, fate”, and scrolling – “flipping”.
Scientists emphasize that doomscrolling can destroy physical and mental health. The action of doomscrolling is compared with the ability of fabulous creatures – Dementors – from the Harry Potter books, which feed on the bright emotions of a person, gradually sucking out the soul of the victim. Man remains alive, but he can no longer be called a rational being.
“When you scroll through the news feed, the brain is constantly in an excited state,” said study lead author Brian McLaughlin. He added that many people, in order to disconnect from unpleasant thoughts, begin to read the stream of news, but this creates an even more terrible picture of the world in their head. Every time a person grabs a smartphone in the hope of receiving encouraging information, he is faced with even worse news.
This leads to a sharp drop in the body of serotonin – the “hormone of joy” – and an increase in stress hormones: adrenaline and cortisol. As a result, there is a burnout of the psycho-emotional state and deterioration of the physical state.
Scientists recommend that you dose your reading of the news, turn off notifications, do not participate in online disputes, and do not watch the news before bed.
