The Ministry of Agriculture of the Russian Federation proposes to ban industrial and amateur fishing of roach in the Astrakhan region and the Caspian Sea until the end of 2024. This is due to the difficult situation with the population of this fish.

The Volga-Caspian branch of the Federal State Budgetary Institution “VNIRO” said that since the 20th century, the catch of roach in the Astrakhan region has fallen hundreds of times. The population was negatively affected by the annual decrease in water level in the Volga in the Astrakhan region, including during the spawning period.

The Ministry of Agriculture proposes to allow roach fishing in the Astrakhan region for a ten-day period from April 20 to 30. At the same time, during industrial fishing in the Astrakhan region, Kalmykia, the Republic of Dagestan and the Caspian Sea, it is proposed to introduce restrictions on roach – up to 0.2% of the total weight of the industrial catch of the quota holder.

According to the strategy for the socio-economic development of the Astrakhan region until 2035, the fishery complex occupies one of the most important places in the economy of the region. However, recently this industry has been experiencing negative changes. In 2023, the fish catch was 1.5 thousand tons less 2023 level.

Meanwhile in Kalmykia spring season has started, which will last until May 20. In the marine zone of the Northern Caspian Sea, fishermen will have to develop 3.8 thousand tons of aquatic biological resources. Industry representatives are ready to catch, receive and process fish.
