FAC.C.T.: Fraudsters are trying to steal a number by issuing an eSIM to log into online banks

Experts from the cybercrime company FAC.C.T. talked about a new type of fraud involving theft of a phone number.

According to experts, scammers are now trying to steal a user’s mobile number by replacing or restoring a digital SIM card – eSIM. Fraudsters send an application on the operator’s website from the real owner to be transferred from a physical SIM card to an electronic one. Thus, attackers gain access to the phone number.

According to Dmitry Dudkov, a specialist in the Fraud Protection department at FACCT, by obtaining a user’s mobile number, fraudsters can bypass two-factor authentication to log into an online bank. Messages with a code will be sent to the stolen number, which allows scammers to easily log into the application and withdraw all the money from the account.

Citizens were advised to follow online safety rules to avoid becoming a victim of deception. All applications must enable two-factor authentication and use strong passwords. Users were also advised to closely monitor messages about SIM card re-issuance and blocking.
