Russian scientists have proven the tumor-like nature of obesity

Obesity is tumor-like in nature, reported “Gazete.Ru” Andrey Kozlov, professor of Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University, who is the head of the laboratory of gene neofunctionalization of the Institute of General Genetics. N.I. Vavilov RAS, as well as the Laboratory of Molecular Biology of the Research Institute of Hygiene, Occupational Pathology and Human Ecology of the Federal Medical and Biological Agency.
According to the professor, scientists “experimentally showed that the TSEEN genes that work in tumors also work in samples of visceral adipose tissue” obtained as a result of bariatric surgery in patients with extreme obesity.
According to him, the researchers “received direct experimental confirmation of the tumor-like nature of obesity,” and were also able to describe the gene network of 7 genes that originated from the TSEEN genes of fish and acquired a progressive function of participating in the development of adipose tissues of mammals, including humans.
“Each of the genes that are members of the network, depending on the context, is either an oncogene or a tumor suppressor (the so-called antagonistic dualism),” Kozlov said.
This, he says, “confirms the origin of the mammalian adipose organ from ancestral mesenchymal inherited fish tumors,” and also opens up new ways to treat and prevent tumors and obesity.
