Chemists from Moscow State University have found the cause of the unpleasant smell of gray whale meat, which is caught by the indigenous people of Chukotka. Chemosphere magazine writes about it.

According to scientists, this is due to the diet of gray whales, which mainly feed on polytech annelids.

“The amount of dibromophenol in stink whales is 300-500 times higher than in normal whales. At the same time, such a high concentration of this substance is 500 times higher than the sensitivity threshold for a person, that is, the smell can really be felt distinctly,” said Doctor of Chemistry, Professor Albert Lebedev.
