Employees of the National Scientific Center for Marine Biology of the Far East Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences have discovered genes that are responsible for muscle regeneration. Writes about it “Gazeta.Ru” with reference to the Ministry of Education and Science.

Scientists have studied holothurians, which are able to completely regenerate all their internal organs and even recover after “sea cucumbers” are cut into several pieces.

According to Vladimir Nizhnichenko, an employee of the Laboratory of Comparative Cytology of the NSCMB FEB RAS, the researchers studied the activity of the genes of two types of holothurian muscles – damaged and undamaged. So, biologists managed to isolate a number of genes that are active during the restoration of integuments.

“We assume that these genes may be involved in muscle recovery,” Nizhnichenko said.

Moreover, the genes that regulate the synthesis of proteins aroused particular interest of biologists – they are necessary for the restoration of connective tissues. In total, scientists have identified 13 genes that help holothurians regenerate.

According to biologists, in the future, the study of the molecular mechanisms of regeneration will provide an opportunity to better understand the processes of tissue regeneration in other living beings, including vertebrates. In addition, scientists plan to one day apply the mechanism of recovery in the human body.
