Glaciologists: London-sized iceberg breaks off in Antarctica

According to the BBC, employees of the British Antarctic Survey reported about the formation of a new iceberg that broke off the Brant Ice Shelf in Antarctica.
It is known that the area of the ice block is 1550 square kilometers – almost the same area covers the area of the capital of the United Kingdom. The thickness of the glacier is 150 meters.
According to glaciologists, the formation of the iceberg is not associated with global warming, since this is a natural process for glaciers. However, Dominic Hodgson, a scientist with the British Antarctic Survey, said the organization would continue to monitor the glacier’s behavior.
Earlier, a group of scientists led by Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences Leopold Lobkovsky reported that the sharp warming of the climate in the Arctic in 1979–1980 was due to a series of catastrophic earthquakes.
According to the researchers, it was tectonic waves that originated in the middle of the last century in the Aleutian zone of interaction of lithospheric plates closest to the Arctic shelf that could become a trigger.
