Russian Orthodox Church hopes for reprieve from mobilization for priests

The Russian Orthodox Church hopes that the right to deferment from mobilization will be enshrined in a presidential decree. This was stated at a round table in the State Duma of the Russian Federation by the head of the legal department of the Moscow Patriarchate, Abbess Xenia (Chernega).
Traditional denominations, as Abbess Xenia recalled, petitioned in the fall for a separate decree on granting priests a deferment from military service due to mobilization. “So far, the petition has not been fully granted,” she said, speaking at a parliamentary event as part of the Christmas Readings. The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation adopted an interim decision on the release of priests from conscription for military service on mobilization. “But no presidential decree has been issued,” she stressed.
According to the current Russian legislation, deferment from conscription for military service to certain categories of citizens for mobilization should be granted exclusively by the President of the Russian Federation.
