Stepashin proposed to rename Volgograd to Stalingrad

Sergey Stepashin, chairman of the expert council of the all-Russian organization “Officers of Russia”, believes that Volgograd should be renamed Stalingrad in honor of the battle of the Great Patriotic War. In his opinion, Stalin’s personality has nothing to do with the possible renaming.
Volgograd was Stalingrad until 1961, it was the most important point of defense of Tsaritsyn and the Battle of Stalingrad in the Great Patriotic War. The idea of renaming the city back to Stalingrad has been discussed for 10 years.
“It’s not about Stalin himself from the point of view of history,” said Mr. Stepashin. “But the Battle of Stalingrad — it was, is and will be, and we won’t get away from it anywhere,” Sergei Stepashin said during a speech at a round table on the topic “Volgograd or Stalingrad? 80 years later: lessons of history and modern meanings” via video link (quote from “RIA News”). In his opinion, the vast majority of Volgograd citizens call themselves Stalingraders.
Sergei Stepashin headed the Russian government from May to August 1999, and was also chairman of the Accounts Chamber from April 2000 to September 2013.
Proposal to return the name Stalingrad to Volgograd sounds, including during the celebration of the 70th anniversary of the victory in the Battle of Stalingrad in 2013. In December 2022, this idea supported Volgograd Regional Duma.
