Russian authorities want to silence Muratov by entering them into the register of foreign agents – Kommersant

The Norwegian Nobel Committee commented on Russia’s decision to add Dmitry Muratov, editor-in-chief of Novaya Gazeta, to the register of foreign agents. Committee chairman Berit Reiss-Andersen said the Russian authorities are trying to silence the journalist.
The Norwegian Nobel Committee determines the candidates and laureates of the Nobel Peace Prize.
“It is sad that the Russian authorities are now trying to silence him. The charges against him are politically motivated,” the statement said (quoted by AFP).
Ms. Reiss-Andersen recalled that Mr. Muratov was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to promote freedom of speech, freedom of information and independent journalism. She noted that the Norwegian Nobel Committee continues to “support the important work” done by Mr. Muratov and Novaya Gazeta.
Ministry of Justice of Russia contributed the Nobel Peace Prize winner to the list of foreign agents, accusing Mr. Muratov of “creating and distributing messages and materials of foreign agents to an unlimited circle of people”, of using foreign platforms to disseminate opinions “aimed at forming a negative attitude towards Russia’s foreign and domestic policy.”
Dmitry Muratov received Nobel Peace Prize in 2021 with Filipino journalist Maria Ressa. The editor-in-chief of Novaya Gazeta dedicated the award to the murdered journalists of his publication. In September 2022, Russian courts annulled licenses for the printed version of Novaya Gazeta and Novaya rasskaz-gazeta, as well as the publication’s website. In June 2023, the Prosecutor General’s Office acknowledged unwanted “Novaya Gazeta Europe” – a publication that was created by the staff of the editorial office of “Novaya Gazeta” (was registered in Latvia).
