At the moment, the Russian side does not believe that there is an immediate threat to nuclear safety at the Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) – this view is consistent with the conclusions of the IAEA. However, as Russia’s permanent representative to international organizations in Vienna, Mikhail Ulyanov, stressed, Russia’s position on this issue may change as the situation develops.
“It is difficult to predict how long consultations will last on creating a “protection zone” there, since not everything depends on the IAEA secretariat and Russia. A constructive contribution from Kyiv is required,” Ulyanov told TASS. He accused the Ukrainian side of massive shelling of nuclear power plants and the lack of a constructive contribution to resolving the issue.
According to the permanent representative of the Russian Federation, the definition of the parameters of the agreements on the creation of a “protective zone” will not affect the status of the nuclear power plant as a facility controlled by the Russian authorities.
Today the IAEA Director General spent in Istanbul, negotiations with a Russian delegation led by the head of Rosatom Alexei Likhachev. The central topic of discussion was the creation of a protective zone around the ZNPP.
