Deputy Director of the Central Research Institute of Epidemiology of Rospotrebnadzor Natalya Pshenichnaya told reporters on Saturday that it is difficult to say whether the taste or smell will finally be restored in patients who have had Covid.
“It is difficult to say whether the taste or smell will finally be restored in those who experience problems with them after suffering COVID-19,” she said.
According to her, before the coronavirus pandemic, problems with smell were noted in 1.5% of the population. After 50 years, they appear in more than half of the people, and after 80 years, over 80% experience them.
And, if a person had a predisposition to such disorders even before covid, then after the illness, they can continue “indefinitely,” the expert noted.
In general, post-COVID syndrome is recorded in patients around the world. It occurs in one in 8 adult patients, Pshenichnaya said.
In some cases, as she explained, “with post-covid syndrome, there are signs of damage to the cardiovascular system, kidneys, and metabolic disorders.”
At the same time, in a number of patients “for the past two years” there has been a “persistent loss of taste and smell.”
According to Pshenichnaya, post-COVID syndrome is more common in people at risk who have had the disease in a more severe form. However, it is also registered in young people who have recovered easily. The most common symptoms are drowsiness and fatigue.
