The head of the department of the Research Institute of Epidemiology of Rospotrebnadzor, Vadim Pokrovsky, announced a significant increase in the number of HIV-infected people in Russia against the backdrop of the inclusion of the DPR, LPR, Kherson and Zaporozhye regions into the country. In this regard, he drew attention to the fact that the authorities will have to increase the purchase of drugs for HIV patients.

“We have an increasing number of HIV-infected people due to new territories. There, of course, it is difficult to say how many people will get treatment, because some may go to the West. This is another point that requires an increase in the budget for the purchase of medicines by about one and a half times, ”he said on the air of the radio station. Moscow speaking.

According to him, the issue of increasing the cost of purchasing medicines for HIV-infected people will be considered by the State Duma when approving the country’s state budget for next year. “The law implies that HIV-infected people should receive medicines at the expense of state or local budgets until old age, and the Duma must comply with this law,” Mr. Pokrovsky summed up.

Earlier it became known that by the end of 2021 Russia entered in the top five countries with the highest rate of HIV infection. This followed from the data presented by the Joint United Nations Program on HIV / AIDS (UNAIDS) and the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC): Russia accounted for 3.9% of the 1.5 million new infections in the world. According to this indicator, only South Africa (14% of all new cases), Mozambique (6.5%), Nigeria (4.9%) and India (4.2%) overtook Russia. UNAIDS estimates are close to the statistics of the Ministry of Health, which announced more than 50 thousand new infections in 2021. Statistics for 2022 have not yet been released.
