A leopard named Leo 260M was recorded in the Lazovsky Nature Reserve, which was rescued and relocated to the Ussuriysky Nature Reserve in the spring of 2023. This is the first Far Eastern leopard to reach the Lazovsky Nature Reserve in the last 50 years. Leo 260M was found without its mother in the summer of 2022 at the border national park “Land of the Leopard” The orphan was taken to the Rehabilitation Center, where he gradually recovered and learned hunting and other skills.
Leo 260M was one of three leopards relocated to the Ussuri Nature Reserve as part of a reintroduction project. The reserve is the historical habitat of the leopard, but due to human activity, the spotted cats have not been seen here for more than half a century. The Leo 260M was chosen as one of the pioneers, but it didn’t stop there. The young animal began to actively explore the surroundings of the reserve and traveled east for more than 100 km, which led it to the Lazovsky reserve.
The Far Eastern leopard reintroduction project is being implemented under the scientific leadership of the Institute of Ecology and Evolution. A.N. Severtsov RAS (IPEE RAS) with the support of “Land of the Leopard” and ANO “Far Eastern Leopards” and is the first of its kind.
