“Christianity in Ukraine will be repressed”
“The apocalypse will begin in Ukraine,” Metropolitan Pavel (Lebed), the rector of the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra, said, commenting on the decision of the Ukrainian authorities to “deport” the monks from the monastery until March 29. The formal reason for the eviction of the UOC from the Lower Church of the Lavra is the expiration of the lease. However, it is no secret to anyone that the holy churches are preparing to transfer to another church – the OCU, which the Orthodox ROC and the UOC recognize as schismatic. However, a peaceful redistribution is not expected: Metropolitan Pavel said that the monks would not leave the Lavra voluntarily, which means that it is worth waiting for a “non-peaceful outcome.”
According to Metropolitan Pavel, the clergy are going to defend their rights and shrines to the last. “The devil is doing everything possible to stop prayer. We must not shame the Church, even if they shoot me. I’m not afraid of death. We are not for riots, not for revolutions, but let us pray as we want, as we have been taught,” he said.
“It was clear that things were moving towards this,” a well-known historian and religious scholar Roman Silantyev told MK. – The authorities of Ukraine have chosen neo-paganism with a bias towards Satanism as their ideology. This means that all Christianity there will be repressed, I think that the shrines will not only be handed over to the schismatics, but also destroyed.
Unfortunately, we are seeing such cases more and more often: Now a video has appeared on the Internet with the destruction of Orthodox icons. But if a new icon can be painted, then the new relics of Ilya Muromets (which are stored in the caves of the Lavra), for example, cannot be created. I have already stated publicly that the main values of the saints had to be evacuated even after the victory of the Euromaidan in 2014, when there was such an opportunity. But someone hoped that it was possible to negotiate with these people. Now we see one more confirmation that it is impossible. And we can’t stop it.”
According to the expert, there are enough sad precedents in history. The situation in Ukraine can be compared not only with the actions of the Bolsheviks in the Soviet Union, but also with the situation in Albania in 1967, when the communist Enver Hoxha, having gained power in the country, proclaimed Albania “the world’s first atheistic state.” Religion was banned at the legislative level, and hundreds of monasteries were destroyed, the survivors were converted into warehouses and workshops.
Priests were defrocked, imprisoned, sent into exile, and those who did not obey were shot on the spot. We can also recall the bloody regime of the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia led by Pol Pot, who saw a potential danger for themselves in any religion, starting mass repressions against religious organizations, legally enshrined in the constitution.
“Of course, those who are now doing all this in Ukraine will face heavenly judgment, but perhaps they will be punished in this life,” Silantyev believes, “Of course, this is a very serious insult to the entire Orthodox community. We have only six laurels, and one of the two main ones will, in fact, be eliminated. After the Kiev-Pechersk, the Pochaev Lavra in the Ternopil region will be attacked, I don’t even doubt it.
– What is the purpose of the Kiev regime to defeat the UOC?
— The UOC, despite all the conciliatory statements of its leadership, is doomed. Its history is over, because in the territories that have become ours, there will be a Russian Orthodox Church, and in the territories that will remain with them, it will simply be liquidated.
