Radio Liberty journalist Kurmasheva was left under arrest until February 5

The Soviet District Court of Kazan, at the request of the investigative department of the Investigative Committee for Tatarstan, today, December 1, extended the arrest until February 5 of Radio Free Europe / Radio Liberty journalist (recognized as a foreign agent) Alsu Kurmasheva.

She has Russian and US citizenship. She was detained in Kazan on October 18 and arrested on October 23 in connection with charges under Part 3 of Art. 330.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (failure to fulfill the obligation of foreign agents established by the legislation of the Russian Federation to register in the appropriate register, if there is a targeted collection of information in the field of military, military-technical activities of the Russian Federation and this data can be used by foreigners against the security of the Russian Federation).

Court hearings regarding the suppression of the journalist are being held behind closed doors. The Investigation Department of the Investigative Committee for Tatarstan does not comment on the case.

According to the state publication Tatar-inform, she is accused of obtaining information about mobilized teachers of a Tatarstan university in order to use this information in preparing “alternative analytical materials” for “conducting information campaigns discrediting Russia.”

Alsou Kurmasheva lives with her family in Prague. Before that, she lived and worked in Kazan, where she came for family reasons. According to Radio Liberty, she was going to return to her family in the summer, but on June 2 she was detained at the Kazan airport and her Russian and US passports were taken away for failure to notify her of her second citizenship. She remained in Russia, awaiting the return of her passports.
