Putin supported the idea of amnesty for certain categories of women – Kommersant

Russian President Vladimir Putin, at a meeting with the Human Rights Council, supported the idea of the need to make decisions on amnesty for some women who are serving criminal sentences for non-violent crimes. The proposal was voiced by HRC member Eva Merkacheva.
During the meeting, Mrs. Merkacheva called for pardons for all women convicted of non-violent crimes, as well as those who were convicted for the first time under such articles, if there are no victims in their case or they do not object to the amnesty.
“As for women in prison: the examples you gave are convincing. And I think that it is necessary to prepare and make appropriate decisions, including amnesty for certain categories of women who are in prison,” said Mr. Putin (quoted from “RIA News”).
In May, Vladimir Putin during a meeting with Chairman of the Supreme Court Vyacheslav Lebedev instructed work with experts on the issue of humanizing criminal practice. Mr. Lebedev then spoke about the preparation of a bill that would make it possible not to bring women to criminal liability if they have committed a crime of minor or moderate gravity for the first time.
In December 2022, Eva Merkacheva appealed to Vladimir Putin with a request to abolish pre-trial detention for women who have committed non-violent crimes. The head of state promised to instruct us to work on this issue.
