Putin is concerned about forest fires in the Ryazan region

President Vladimir Putin holds a meeting on the situation with wildfires in Russia. He noted that although the total burning area this year is almost three times less than in 2021, the fight against natural fires is difficult. The most difficult situation is recorded in the Ryazan, Nizhny Novgorod, Rostov regions, as well as in Komi, Mari El and Yakutia. Mr. Putin asked Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Grigorenko to visit Russian regions where the situation with fires is difficult, and personally get acquainted with the situation.
According to the president, 104 forest fires are now being extinguished in 18 regions on an area of more than 107,000 hectares. He was especially concerned about fires in a five-kilometer zone from settlements in the Ryazan region. He ordered to take all measures to eliminate fires in the region and minimize the consequences of them. “Unfortunately, fires continue to spread in the Ryazan region due to strong winds, and their outbreaks in several districts are located within a five-kilometer zone from settlements. This is of particular concern,” Vladimir Putin said.
He noted that the risks of a worsening situation remain in the European part of Russia, as well as in certain regions of the Far East, where the fire situation is “traditionally difficult”. The President clarified that both in Russia as a whole and in Europe there is abnormally hot weather, which led to large natural fires. “The fight against them, taking into account high temperatures, drought, drying up of rivers, and other factors, is going on practically across the entire continent, it is difficult, it requires the attraction of large-scale resources,” Mr. Putin said.
Over the past day, the area of forest fires in the Ryazan region increased by a quarter, up to 11.7 thousand hectares. The region is in a state of emergency. Smoke from fires reached Moscow: smog and fumes in the capital hold on from last week. Rosleskhoz accused the authorities of the Ryazan region in concealing the extent of the fires. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin sent 240 firefighters and three helicopters to the region to help with localization of fires. A few days later, the number of the Moscow group of firefighters increased to almost 9 thousand. Yesterday, August 23, the government of the Russian Federation created commission for the elimination of forest fires.
