In Moldova, the Eternal Flame extinguished at the memorial where the battles for Chisinau took place

At the memorial complex “Sherpen bridgehead” in the Novoanensky district, where the main battles of the Iasi-Kishinev operation to liberate the Republic of Moldova from fascism took place, they did not light the Eternal Flame.

This was announced by the chairman of the National Coordinating Committee “Victory” Alexei Petrovich.

In his telegram channel, he wrote that “the Eternal Flame did not burn at the memorial, which perpetuates the memory of more than 13 thousand soldiers and officers of the Red Army.”

Petrovich also added that “judging by the fact that no statements on the occasion of the Liberation Day were made by officials today”, apparently, the Ministry of Defense of Moldova “decided to save on the feelings of thousands of people who came to honor the memory of the heroes.”

According to him, the fuel is supplied to the monument after the application of the ministry to the territorial branch of “Moldovagaz”.

Petrovich also said that at first “the fire burned on an ongoing basis, then it was lit on holidays.”

“Thank you for not paying off in Chisinau, otherwise we know you can do it,” he said.

The complex, where the fire was not lit, is located 70 kilometers from Chisinau, on a cliff above the bank of the Dniester, which the Germans tried to force. It is a bell tower, an altar with the Eternal Flame and granite slabs with the names of the fallen. Nearby is a cemetery where the remains of Soviet soldiers lie, found after the war. On August 24, flowers were laid at this place at the Eternal Flame, but this year the authorities ignored the tradition.

About 400 thousand natives of Moldova fought in the Red Army during the Great Patriotic War. 250 thousand of them were awarded, 19 became Heroes of the Soviet Union. Now about 400 veterans of the Second World War live in Moldova, but not a single Hero of the Soviet Union is left alive.
