Russian President Vladimir Putin instructed to think about mechanisms to support the widows of Northern Military District soldiers who lived without a formal marriage. The head of state announced this at a meeting of the Council for the Development of Civil Society and Human Rights (HRC).

“What I would like to draw attention to is that we must be careful, of course, so that there are no abuses here, but, of course, we should also think about supporting those women who lived in a civil marriage with their husbands,” the president said (quoted by TASS).

Vladimir Putin emphasized that the state has developed mechanisms for establishing the fact of residence in such a union. He emphasized that such unions often have children together. “So that neither the children nor these women are left without support,” the president emphasized.

Also during the meeting, Vladimir Putin noted that Russia does not abandon the principles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and is ready to cooperate with all interested countries and partners in the human rights field.

He called on the HRC not to weaken control over the situation with torture in the penitentiary system, as well as law enforcement agencies and intelligence services. He also pointed out the inadmissibility of delaying the preliminary investigation. Mr. Putin called it unacceptable that “people sit under investigation for years.”
