Putin awarded Tereshkova with the Order of Gagarin on the day of the 60th anniversary of her flight into space

President Vladimir Putin signed a decree on awarding State Duma deputy Valentina Tereshkova with the Order of Gagarin. She was awarded for merits in space exploration and active social and international activities. The award was established at the end of May, Mrs. Tereshkova became the first holder of the order.
“For outstanding services in the exploration of outer space, courage and dedication shown during the implementation of a historic manned flight into space, active public and international activities”— says in the decree.
In 1960, Valentina Tereshkova joined the first cosmonaut corps. On June 16, 1963, the Vostok-6 spacecraft carrying Mrs. Tereshkova, the first female cosmonaut, went into low Earth orbit from the Baikonur cosmodrome. She spent almost three days in space.
Valentina Tereshkova was elected to the State Duma from United Russia in 2011. Prior to that, she was a deputy of the Yaroslavl Regional Duma.
