Russian President Vladimir Putin and Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin opened the Sun of Moscow ferris wheel at VDNKh via videoconferencing.
The Moscow mayor told the head of state that the previous Ferris wheel was morally and physically obsolete. The authorities of the capital chose an investor for a long time, but found a suitable one. Without attracting budgetary funds, he built the largest Ferris wheel in Europe, pushing the attraction in London into the shadows.
The “Sun of Moscow” wheel includes 30 closed cabins with video surveillance, climate control and a button to communicate with the operator. Each can accommodate up to 15 guests. Five cabins are equipped with a transparent floor. One revolution lasts 18 minutes and 40 seconds. In total, the capital attraction can accommodate up to 450 people.
More than 2.5 million visitors will be able to ride the wheel every year. It is expected that it will become the main point of attraction at VDNKh and one of the most popular sights of the capital.
The two-story Ferris wheel complex has entertainment spaces, the Lisapark Museum-Theater, a food court, a souvenir shop and a game center.
The height of the Ferris wheel “London Eye”, previously considered the largest in Europe, is 135 meters. Wheel “Sun of Moscow” – 140 meters.
