Women cope better with stress when someone nearby is also going through it. This conclusion was made by psychologists from Columbia University.
The experiment involved students and couples living in the area. At one of the stages of the study, the girls had to make a speech, and their partner to give an assessment – the same as the girls themselves, the opposite or neutral. In the first case, the stress level turned out to be minimal, according to an article published in a scientific journal. Frontiers in Psychology.
In the second part of the experiment, participants kept diaries for two weeks, where they noted stress factors and assessed the degree of their experiences. As it turned out, 99% of women endured the stress suffered with a partner much easier when he was also worried. In men, 58% experienced higher anxiety when their partner was worried about the same thing. In general, women reported higher levels of anxiety than men.
The authors of the study write that women are probably evolutionarily adapted to unite to protect themselves from threats, and this is best done with the so-called shared reality – common feelings and judgments about something.
