Petersburg authorities want to limit the launch of balloons

The authorities of St. Petersburg propose to limit the launch of balloons to reduce the burden on the environment. Such an initiative was discussed at the Coordinating Council for Environmental Education under the Committee on Natural Resources, informs press service of the mayor’s office.

The council noted that balloons launched into the sky harm the environment, as they pollute nature, and can cause injuries and death of animals. Particularly harmful were considered light balls using batteries – waste of the second hazard class.

At the same time, the participants of the discussion drew attention to the fact that the launch of balloons has become a popular tradition during various events. The experts proposed to solve the problem of using balls in a complex way.

“Now there is no legal ban on launching balloons in St. Petersburg, but everyone can make the holiday brighter with the help of environmentally friendly alternatives – soap bubble shows, kite flying, dance and song flash mobs, lighting candles, planting trees,” suggested the head of the Environmental Protection Department. education and external relations of the Committee for Nature Management Marina Savchenko.

The participants of the discussion noted that the inhabitants of the country annually send millions of air, helium, light balloons and “Chinese” lanterns into the sky. Their remains of latex and rubber become garbage that animals eat and die.
