Eighteen retired officers and soldiers who were charged with the extrajudicial execution of 39 peasants in 1988 in Peru were sentenced to between 8 and 15 years in prison, informs RG.RU.
The massacre of people took place in one of the most brutal periods in the history of Peru – during the confrontation between government troops and left-wing partisan formations.
The court found that on May 14, 1988, two patrols of the Peruvian armed forces entered the peasant community of Cayara, where they tortured and executed local residents in an attempt to obtain information from them about an attack by a Maoist guerrilla group on a government force unit, which killed 4 soldiers.
Officers Marco Jesus and Luis Marin, who participated in those events, received 15 years in prison. The remaining 16 soldiers and sergeants – 8 years each.
The military denied the accusations during the process and stated that the peasants were already dead when they appeared in the community. They accused the partisans of the crime, but the court rejected their version based on the testimony of witnesses who survived the massacre.
According to the final report of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, the armed conflict in Peru, which took place from 1980 to 2000, killed about 69,000 people. Most of them are poor peasants in the highlands of the Andes.
