Patriarch Kirill stated that there is, in his opinion, the need to exclude artificial termination of pregnancy from the list of services provided by private clinics in Russia. In his opinion, commercial medical organizations are cashing in on “women’s grief” and violate “anti-abortion” restrictions.
The statements were made at the plenary session of the Christmas parliamentary meetings. The head of the Russian Orthodox Church, among other things, said that “anti-abortion” restrictions in recent years were “accepted by the state with the full support of society.”
“The time has come to legally remove abortion from the list of so-called services,” Kirill said.
At the same time, the head of the patriarchal commission on family, motherhood and childhood, Fyodor Lukyanov, speaking at a round table of the State Duma’s profile committee, said that married women should be required by law to obtain permission for abortion from their husbands. He also stated that only a threat to the health of the mother, and not the child, should be considered as medical indications for abortion, since perinatal screening is inaccurate.
