Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Rus’ said that Russian citizens should thank God for the fact that they live in a “really free country.” In addition, the head of the Russian Orthodox Church called for prayers for Russian President Vladimir Putin.
“We must thank the Lord for every day we live, for the fact that we live in a truly free country. I counted only five such countries, maybe a little more, because all the rest are not really free… Pray for our fatherland, for our Supreme Commander-in-Chief Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin, an Orthodox man who is clearly aware of the enormous responsibility that is entrusted to him from above,” – said the patriarch during a sermon in the Znamensky Church at the main directorate of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs for Moscow (quote from website ROC).
In addition, the head of the Russian Orthodox Church said that Russians need to pray for those who protect the country from enemies and from disorder, crime and everything that could lead to civil strife if not stopped by force.
In the annual ranking of civil liberties compiled by the alliance of human rights organizations CIVICUS, Russia came in in the worst of the five, “closed” category of countries. Together with it, in particular, Afghanistan, Myanmar, Belarus, Azerbaijan, China, Iran, North Korea and Saudi Arabia fell into this category.
In the press freedom ranking compiled by Reporters Without Borders, Russia takes 164th place between Bangladesh (163) and Turkey (165). According to the Canadian Fraser Institute, the level of economic freedom of the Russian Federation took 104th place in the world, as close as possible to the position in 1980, when the Soviet Union was in 107th place in the Fraser Institute ranking.
