On Tallinn’s Town Hall Square, police stopped a group of tourists who came to the Christmas market wearing white, blue and red knitted hats. According to Delfi, police told tourists that the country has a law banning “hostile symbols.” However, they later established that the color scheme corresponded to the flag of Slovakia, and not Russia.
The law, passed by the Estonian parliament last April, bans the use of “hostile symbols” and penalizes the public display of signs associated with supporting or justifying acts of aggression, genocide, crimes against humanity or war crimes. Punishment may include fines of up to 1.2 thousand euros or arrest. For legal entities, a fine of up to 32 thousand euros is provided.
The text of the law does not specify specific symbols, but local police say that “hostile symbols” include St. George’s ribbons, the “Z” sign, flags and emblems of Russia and the USSR, as well as the uniform of the Soviet army.
