The Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea has unveiled a new Cabinet of Ministers, which, in addition to new faces, also has new positions, including the Minister of Coffee.
“This ministry, the first of its kind in the world, demonstrates the government’s commitment to the development of the country’s key agricultural sectors,” said Prime Minister James Marape, who retained his post in the wake of recent parliamentary elections marked by demonstrations and accusations of ballot-rigging. A Minister for Palm Oil was also appointed for the first time.
“These appointments highlight the special importance of agriculture. Agriculture is the branch of the economy where the government can have the greatest impact on the people of this country, because most of our people are subsistence farmers. We have land and we should encourage our people to do it,” Marape said on August 23, announcing a new cabinet of 33 officials.
According to The Guardian, now coffee in the country is grown mainly by small farmers, who account for 85 percent of the annual crop. And it accounts for 27 percent of all agricultural exports and 6 percent of the country’s total GDP.
Only sales of palm oil bring more, they account for about 40 percent of exports. The new government will also pay special attention to this area.
