Since February 2022, foreign states, including European countries, have refused to extradite persons suspected of crimes to Russia 74 times. This was announced by Deputy Prosecutor General Pyotr Gorodov. According to him, the refusals were “politically motivated.”
“In total, last year, after the start of a special military operation to protect the civilian population of Donbass from genocide and other crimes of the Kiev regime, the competent authorities of foreign states, for political reasons, refused to fulfill 74 Russian requests for extradition and 7 requests for legal assistance,” Pyotr Gorodov said on Forum on Public Security Cooperation in China.
The International Forum on Security Issues in the Chinese city of Lianyungang has been held by the Ministry of Public Security of the People’s Republic of China since 2015. It should promote cooperation between law enforcement agencies and security services of different countries.
The reason for the refusal, according to the Deputy Prosecutor General, was usually cited as a lack of confidence in guarantees of respect for the rights of suspects in connection with the outbreak of hostilities in Ukraine, Russia’s withdrawal from the Council of Europe and from the jurisdiction of the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR).
At the same time, Pyotr Gorodov assured that the Prosecutor General’s Office of Russia continues to “fulfill its international obligations” to combat crime.
In early September, the head of the national central bureau of Interpol of the Ministry of Internal Affairs Valery Kalachev statedthat countries “unfriendly” to Russia are discussing its exclusion from Interpol. Formally, Interpol’s charter does not provide for expulsion procedures.
