Ovchinsky: VNIIZhT – 105 years of innovation for railways

On April 18, the Research Institute of Railway Transport (VNIIZhT) celebrates its 105th anniversary. The Institute annually becomes a participant in more than 1000 projects. On its basis, new technologies and innovative equipment are being developed and tested.
“Today, the institute is engaged in developments in such topical areas as ecology and non-carbon energy, digital technologies and engineering activities, process management in railway transport, logistics and new types of freight traffic,” said Vladislav Ovchinsky, head of the Moscow Investment and Industrial Policy Department.
VNIIZhT was founded in 1918. It became the first such center in the country and was named the Experimental Institute of Communications.
Today, unmanned trains are being tested here, which will travel along the MCC in the future. In addition, scientists are working on a unique diagnostic system. It will allow predicting future malfunctions of the rolling stock.
The work of VNIIZhT employees has become key in the implementation of the Sapsan projects, aeroexpresses to the capital’s airports, and many others. The Institute also created the Elbrus system, which is used on all Russian railways.
The company employs more than 1.2 thousand employees, including about 200 candidates and doctors of science.
The scientific potential of VNIIZhT consists of 10 scientific schools. They cover all key areas of the railway industry.
