The solemn event “Lifelong Relay Race” dedicated to the 65th anniversary of the sports school named after V.S. Oshchepkova, took place in Aleksandrovsk-Sakhalinsky on September 29. On this day, sports veterans, coaches, teachers, athletes and a large number of guests gathered at the central regional house of culture, the press service of the Ministry of Sports of the Sakhalin Region reported.

On the anniversary evening, we remembered the history of the sports institution, which began on September 30, 1958. Exactly ten years ago it was named after the first Russian judoka and founder of sambo, a native of Aleksandrovsk-Sakhalinsky Vasily Oshchepkov.

Among the honored guests of the event was the Minister of Sports of the Sakhalin Region Artem Podshivalov.

“The opening of the school was a logical continuation of the development of the sports traditions of the first capital of Sakhalin. Alexandrovsk-Sakhalinsky is the cradle of our sport. It was here that the first physical education clubs appeared and the first summer sports and winter competitions were held. In the 1930s, athletes from Aleksandrovsk already began to participate in all-Union competitions. Happy anniversary, friends!” — Artem Podshivalov congratulated.

This evening we honored those who made an invaluable contribution to the sports results and achievements of the school’s students. Those who raised the first masters and candidates for master of sports. These are former directors and coaches, students of past years and public figures in the area. We also remembered those who are no longer with us. Many students and coaches of the sports school performed at competitions at the republican and All-Union levels, and were members of the national team of the USSR, the Far East and Siberia.

“It’s very nice to be at such a memorable event. A sports school is an institution where, first of all, character is developed, which helps us overcome any difficulties. I am sure that today’s anniversary of the sports school will lead to the development of new sports infrastructure in our city in the coming years,” said the mayor of Alexandrovsk-Sakhalinsky Vladlen Antonyuk.
