One of the greatest pianists of the 20th century, Byron Janis, has died at the age of 95.

Byron Janis, the renowned classical pianist who studied with Vladimir Horowitz, has died. He rose to fame when he played Chopin’s previously unknown waltzes and became a “real rock star” in the US after performing in the Soviet Union during the Cold War.

The virtuoso died at the age of 95.

The death occurred Thursday at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, said his wife Maria Cooper Janice, daughter of two-time Oscar-winning actor Gary Cooper.

“I have been fortunate for 58 years to love and be loved not only by one of the greatest artists of the 20th century, but also by an exceptional person who carried his talent to its highest point,” she said in a statement.
