Head of the Department of Head and Neck Tumors, N.N. Petrov» of the Ministry of Health of Russia, oncologist Zamira Radzhabova explained Gazeta.Ru why the number of diagnosed cases of melanoma in Russia is growing.
The fact is, the oncologist said, that the increase in registered cases of the disease is associated with a more thorough diagnostic technique. In addition, a partial contribution to this number is made by the frequent trips of Russians to vacations in the southern regions, as well as visits to tanning studios.
So, for example, in 2008, 7744 cases of melanoma were registered in Russia, while in 2020 this number, according to WHO, exceeded the mark of 12 thousand cases. It is important to understand, Rajabova noted, that the population has also become more aware of diseases: people are increasingly voluntarily undergoing medical examinations, and the number of high-precision equipment is constantly increasing in medical centers.
In addition, in recent decades, Russians have become more likely to visit solariums and travel to southern countries – it is not surprising that increased exposure to UV rays has increased the incidence among Russians.
It is important to note that the death rate from melanoma, in turn, has not grown so dramatically: 4070 cases in 2020 compared to 3159 in 2008.
