New strain of HIV discovered in Cyprus

A new strain of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) has been found in the Republic of Cyprus. About this writes the publication “Fileleftheros”.
The strain was named CRF91_cpx. It was identified by researchers from the University of Cyprus and the Los Alamos National Laboratory (USA). According to doctors, the new strain is recombinant. Its genome is a combination of four known HIV-1 strains – CRF02_AG, G, J and U.
The new strain has been found so far in 14 men living in Cyprus. All of them are people of non-traditional orientation and had sex with other men.
